The Tools

In the early days of the sculpture movement, professional tools were difficult to come by. Artists resorted to making their own out of old car springs and engine parts or using sharpened screwdrivers as chisels and punches. Today, professional tools are more readily available.
1. Hammers and Mallets
Different sizes and weights are used with chisels and punches. Sometimes they are used on their own for creating textures.
2. Chipping Hammers
(also known as scutching or chasing hammers)
They are used in creating bases and shaping, mainly in medium hard stones. They are also used in creating textures.
3. Combs
Inserted into the chipping hammers, combs normally have five or seven teeth, depending on use and texture required.
4. Chisels and Punches
Artists like to have on hand a selection of punches and chisels varying in size, length, and hardness for shaping the image and for details. Sometimes the tools are carbide-tipped
for harder stones.
5. Rasps and Files
They are used for smoothing and creating texture. They wear out quickly and are continually being replaced. The expensive carbide rasps last longer and are very sought after.
6. Brushes
Both fiber and wire are used for dusting off and cleaning.
7. Wet and Dry Sanding Papers
(also known as water papers or emery papers)
Sanding papers are used to prepare finished work for final polishing. They range from rough to very fine (80-1000) grit to produce the finest textures. (not shown above)
8. Rags and Cloths
Some are used for washing off the works with water and some for final polishing and buffing.
9. Safety
Safety goggles and dust masks are used.
10. Heating Torches
Gas and electric heating torches or wood fires are used to heat the areas of stone that need polishing.
After heating a clear wax polish is applied to bring out the natural colors of the stone.
